A fashionable glossy case, a triple camera, a capacious battery … Is it just another flagship for several tens of thousands of rubles? But no. The new HomTom model is intriguing with a combination of the declared characteristics and low cost. We checked whether reality corresponds to reality.
We look and listen
The front camera was positioned unusually – the cutout for it was made in the display, without shifting left or right, but right in the center. From the point of view of aesthetics, such a solution is perceived ambiguously, but it takes up less usable screen area than other options. The cutout does not interfere with viewing the content, and if it comes to playing video in a standard 16: 9 ratio, then it falls into the dark area.
The screen is built on an IPS-matrix with a diagonal of 6.41 inches with a resolution of 720×1560 pixels. The pixel density at this ratio of characteristics was not too high. However, this does not interfere with the convenience of using the display for its intended purpose in most scenarios. According to subjective impressions, the matrix is of good quality, with comfortable viewing angles and adequate color reproduction without noticeable departure in warm or cold tones. There is no adjustment of the color scheme to your preferences, but there is a night mode that reduces the amount of blue radiation – when reading books in the dark, the eyes get tired less.
The external speaker in the P30 Pro is one. It is built into the lower end and does not stand out with any special qualities. On the other hand, it copes with its direct duties flawlessly: the sound on incoming calls is heard well, and its functionality is enough to watch a movie or video on YouTube.
The quieter you go, the further you’ll get
The developers have chosen the Helio P23 chip for the new product; according to its capabilities, it corresponds to modern entry-level solutions. Also note that the P30 Pro received a modification of the processor with lower frequencies (MT6763V). It works in conjunction with 4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB drive. If there is not enough space for storing files and the application, you can install a memory card up to 128 GB instead of the second SIM card.
In everyday work, the smartphone shows its best side. You can only recognize an inexpensive stuffing by the time of application launch – in some cases, the wait is noticeably delayed. The second weak point was the game. Despite the low screen resolution, the performance of the Mali-G71 MP2 video chip is not enough to ensure stable operation at high settings in heavy projects. For example, in World of Tanks: Blitz, switching to the maximum graphics results in drawdowns below 25 fps, which forces the use of less advanced settings.
But 4 GB of RAM provide the device with excellent multitasking. Running programs and open browser tabs are not unloaded from memory for a long time, which in the case of a budget gadget is a pleasant surprise.
The battery for 3900 mAh is responsible for autonomous work. Thanks to this, the device confidently lives on from a single charge for about a day and a half, and if you use it not too actively, you can delay charging for a longer period.
When playing a video in Full HD resolution, the smartphone lasted 12 hours 27 minutes. The brightness of the display was fixed at 50%, and the network interfaces were disabled. The P30 Pro does not support fast charging: from a 10W adapter, the battery was charged at 21% in half an hour, and at 50% in 1 hour 19 minutes.
Three cameras! Or not?
Photo capabilities of the model seem very impressive by the standards of low-cost devices. The triple rear camera alone is worth it. According to the specifications, the P30 Pro is equipped with a 13 megapixel main sensor, an auxiliary with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels to improve images with background blur, and another 5 megapixel with wide-angle optics. Frontal “shooter” is equipped with a matrix with a resolution of 8 megapixels.
However, in practice, it turned out that in the current version of the firmware it is impossible to switch to shirik. Thus, at the moment, the owner of the new smartphone has only the main camera with the “Bokeh” mode. The second problem of the test copy was the disturbed calibration of the orientation of the device: in a horizontal position, he believes that the photo was taken vertically, and vice versa. The inconvenience occurs primarily when watching videos and photos in the gallery. In addition, camera interface elements are also in the wrong position.
Below you can see the test shots. It is a pity that in autumn the weather in the middle lane is cloudy.
In terms of photo quality, the new P30 Pro does not stand out from other budget models. The main problems are observed with detailing and shooting in poor lighting conditions – even a gloomy day negatively affects the result.
The smartphone shoots videos with a maximum resolution of Full HD at 30 frames per second.
But the P30 Pro looks more expensive than it actually is. Here are fashionable gradient colors, and modern aspect ratio, and even the current USB Type-C connector, which manufacturers often skimp on when it comes to low-cost models. There is even a separate button for calling the voice assistant, in our case, pressing it activates the assistant from Google. True, the 3.5 mm audio jack is still removed. So that this does not hit the owners of wired headphones and headsets too much, the manufacturer added an adapter to the package.
With a close acquaintance, the device is no longer felt premium. The case, which from afar seems glass, turns out to be plastic, like the frame. There are comments on the fingerprint scanner – sometimes it can upset two or three errors in a row. However, most of the time the sensor copes with its tasks normally.
Android a healthy person … Almost
To the delight of fans of Google’s unmodified OS, the P30 Pro developers opted for Android 9 Pie without add-ons. Extra elements like a custom shell or additional programs do not slow down the system and do not take up memory space. So the interface works smoothly and responsively, in addition, you do not have to waste time removing unnecessary ones. Although there are drawbacks: the stock system is not rich in settings, so deep customization requires some effort.
However, even here there were some flaws, for example, localization flaws – English words come across in the interface. The two-button navigation system characteristic of Android 9 was also removed. Instead, there was only the usual option with three keys.

HomTom P30 Pro leaves mixed feelings. On one side of the scales are a nice design and modern design findings, as well as good autonomy and clean Android without annoying additions. On the other, there are annoying flaws in the current firmware version, which sometimes directly affect usability, as is the case with the camera application. And the camera itself is difficult to attribute to the advantages of the device. If we were talking about a more expensive device, then the verdict would be unambiguous, but given the low price, the P30 Pro could well count on a certain interest in itself.
