Mi Note 10 intends to break the stereotype that Xiaomi is lagging behind in the development of mobile cameras from other leading manufacturers. The novelty received a 108 megapixel module and four auxiliary lenses for different scenarios. Is this enough to shoot at a high level, and what else is interesting about a smartphone – read the review.
Why smartphone 108 megapixels?
Until recently, many were surprised at 48 megapixel modules, and now you have to get used to 108 megapixels. Far from the fact that this is the limit. Xiaomi Mi Note 10 was the first commercial smartphone with such a camera resolution. In addition to the huge sensor, the novelty received a wide-angle camera of 20 megapixels with autofocus, a 5-megapixel telephoto lens with five-fold optical zoom, a 12-megapixel portrait module with a twofold zoom, and a 2-megapixel macro camera.
On paper, this number of megapixels and sensors seems excessive. But it’s worth spending a few hours with a smartphone, you don’t feel like releasing it from your hands, and in general you catch yourself constantly taking pictures. Different lenses help you get creative: you can capture the same place on a regular camera, take a wide shot and catch a beautiful frame with five times optical zoom.
An example of shooting one building on different cameras.
Samsung produced the main 108 megapixel module, ISOCELL Bright HMX with a pixel size of 0.8 microns and an aperture of f / 1.69. There is optical stabilization – it helps out in the dark and when shooting video. In normal mode, Mi Note 10 shoots with a resolution of 27 megapixels, and for 108 megapixels there is a separate item in the camera interface. When switching to it, HDR and AI stop working. This is a big minus, since modern software is able to take out not the most successful shots, especially when shooting in cloudy weather.
As a result, when viewing a photo on a smartphone or computer screen, a picture in the usual 27-megapixel mode looks noticeably better than in the 108-megapixel one. However, if you carefully study the crop with a strong approximation, you can see the difference: in the photo with a higher resolution, the detail is more detailed and less noise.
A detailed story about the capabilities of the camera is worthy of a separate article. In short, the smartphone not without reason occupies the top lines of DXOMARK. Photos are crisp with lots of detail. True, in cloudy weather and in poorly lit rooms, the device increases shutter speed, which is why fast-moving objects are often blurry. That is, clearly making friends in a bar or alpaca on a farm in winter is not easy.
The width is not for show – it makes cool panoramas. True, autofocus sometimes fails, focusing on the wrong subject. Fivefold zoom works flawlessly, in many respects it is a merit of optical stabilization. The smartphone also supports 10x hybrid zoom without loss of quality and 50x digital zoom.
The smartphone can shoot videos in 4K and 60 fps, there is a function for recording slow-motion video with a frequency of 960 frames / s. The quality was pleasantly surprised: optical stabilization works as if the gadget is installed on a good steadic. This is a big step forward for Xiaomi.
Beauty requires sacrifice
Mi Note 10 is not surprising in design, however, now all smartphones are similar to each other, so this can hardly be attributed to disadvantages.
There is a large rounded drop-shaped rounded display on the front, tempered glass on the back, five lenses and a double flash. There are several colors. The editorial office was visited by a white version with a beautiful mother-of-pearl shade, there are also a black and green version. Mi Note 10 is weighty due to its capacious 5260 mAh battery. It is not very convenient to hold it near the ear for a long time during conversations.
The rounded screen looks impressive both on advertising images and live. However, in reality, it is inconvenient to use it: false clicks often occur, and the image flashes at the edges. Not always the first time the interface elements located behind the fold are pressed. I want the manufacturers to stop competing in the degree of curvature of the matrices and start making simply convenient gadgets.
Otherwise, this is a regular 6.47-inch AMOLED display with Full HD + resolution. The screen produces a great image with rich colors. Viewing angles are large, a brightness margin of 430 nits is enough to work in the sun. There is support for HDR – everything is like in the most top-end devices. At the time of the review, there was no DC Dimming in the smartphone firmware to reduce flicker. We hope that the developers will release an update that will add this feature.
Almost flagship power
Xiaomi Mi Note 10 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G processor, a mid-range chipset made using the 8-nanometer process technology. In Russia, a version with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage is sold. Also available for purchase is the Mi Note 10 Pro with 8/256 GB of memory. There is no microSD card slot.
In benchmarks, the device is gaining a decent amount of points, approximately at the level of last year’s flagships. The processor is inferior to modern top solutions, but users are unlikely to notice this. The interface responds instantly, programs run quickly and do not slow down. All current games like PUBG go to high graphics settings.
The only thing where the speed is lame is the camera application. The smartphone thinks for a second when switching from 108 megapixels to the usual 27-megapixel mode. Sometimes there are delays when changing fivefold optical zoom to wide and vice versa.
Xiaomi Mi Note 10 runs on the latest version of MIUI 11. There are several pre-installed applications, but you can immediately remove them if you wish. As promised, the manufacturer minimized the amount of advertising inside the shell. The system has become more clean and tidy.
The smartphone has impressive autonomy due to several factors: an impressive battery, an economical matrix and an energy-efficient platform. Together, they allow you to squeeze out of the new 23 hours of video playback at medium brightness and about 6 hours of playing PUBG. Discharging Mi Note 10 for a day of active work will be very difficult.
There is support for fast charging at 30 watts, it already lies in the kit. From 0 to 100%, the battery is filled in a little more than an hour – an excellent indicator for such a solid capacity.
