Senator Marco Rubio sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin demanding that the matter be addressed. Rubio wrote in his letter that freedom of expression was denied by the practice. The letter also said that TikTok was honoring the policies of the Chinese government and blocking the United States. Rubio has asked TikTok to investigate the acquisition of Musical.ly in 2017.
TikTok’s censorship claims include the demands that TikTok moderators want to address specific issues. These include events such as Tibet’s struggle for independence and the Tiananmen Square massacre.
A TikTok spokesman also made a statement to Reuters . The Chinese government did not demand censorship, said the spokesman, “Americans are hiding information in the United States,” he said. Chinese citizens who want censorship are using the application Douyin, which is subject to Chinese censorship, instead of TikTok.
